What is PESA?

PESA (percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration) is a method of sperm collection, performed under local anesthesia, which involves extracting sperm with a fine needle from the epididymis or testes. The sperm is then implanted into the center of the egg through the process of ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) to be used in IVF.

The extracted fluid from the epididymis often contains a substantial number of mature and moving sperm. These can then be used to fertilize the female egg with ICSI in Mexico.

A Good Candidate for PESA

PESA can be performed on men that have zero sperm counts due to either a sperm production problem or a blockage in their reproductive tract, such as the result of a vasectomy, congenital absence of vas deferens, or infection.

PESA Procedure

Your expert urologist in Mexico exams and further takes blood samples or schedules a testicular biopsy. The result controls which sperm retrieval procedure is more appropriate and more likely to yield sperm.

PESA is typically performed on the same day as the egg retrieval. With PESA, a small needle is placed into the epididymis, which is a basin of sperm that sets above each testicle, using local anesthesia.

Risks and Side Effects of PESA

Non-surgical sperm aspiration in Mexico generally involves few side effects and no complications. Rarely, infections can occur at the injection or biopsy site.
